About Valerie

Thank you for your interest in Blue Tree Nutrition, LLC. I am the founder and owner of the company and I look forward to meeting you.

I am a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Dietetics from Purdue University. Most of my work experience was at Johns Hopkins Hospital, working on gastrointestinal, cardiovascular and oncology units before moving to Indiana. I became interested in celiac disease when my father-in-law and nephew were diagnosed over 10 years ago. Along the way, I learned that many suffer from other gastrointestinal issues, so decided to focus on this as well. I keep up to date on the newest changes and advances in GI nutrition.

Due to the variety of patients I saw at Johns Hopkins, I also enjoy helping clients with other nutrition issues that are not gastrointestinal related.

What is included in an initial consultation?
Before your initial consultation you will fill out a Nutrition Health Questionnaire. We will discuss the information on the questionnaire. We will go through an entire nutrition education based on your diagnosis or reason for seeing the dietitian. Handouts will be reviewed and brought home to refer to when needed.
What should I expect from a follow-up appointment?
Your follow-up appointment can be what you chose. We can meet and go over questions that have come up since the initial consultation, and evaluate how well you have been doing. You can also use the follow-up appointment to meet at the grocery store of your choice to take a tour with the dietitian. Or Valerie can come to your home to offer suggestions to help decrease the chance of gluten cross contamination in your kitchen (if others are eating gluten in your family).
Do you accept insurance?
No. Blue Tree Nutrition, LLC works as a fee-for-service provider and does not accept insurance. However, if your insurance company provides coverage/reimbursement for nutrition counseling by out-of-network dietitians, we will provide you with a Superbill with the necessary codes to submit to your insurance company as proof of service and payment. Your insurance company may then reimburse you directly for all or part of the services paid. Contact your insurance company for details on reimbursement.
I do not have a diagnosis of celiac disease, but I am having some symptoms, can I still set up an appointment?
If you suspect you could have celiac disease, it is best to get a complete celiac blood test ordered by your doctor first. If you and your doctor find you do not have celiac disease, but you continue to have gluten related problems, then we can meet to go over a gluten-free diet to possibly rule out a gluten sensitivity.
I do not have celiac disease, a gluten sensitivity, IBS or IBD. I would like to see the dietitian for another reason. Can I still make an appointment?
